Hey Tim, I know you asked this question a while back but at that time the only book I had seen about storytelling didn't appeal to me so i couldn't make any recommendations. Recently a good friend gave me a book called Singing Story, Healing Drum: Shamans And Storytellers Of Turkic Sib... by Kira Van Deusen. This book contains so much that is confirming to my experience of storytelling. It is not a how to manual at all but it gives a clear understanding of the relation of the shaman and storyteller and moreover of the mysteries involved with carrying the old stories in ones life.

thanks for this lead - I was originally looking for good source material for my dissertation, which is now long past - but all the same I'm grateful for this. I was particularly affected by the stories around the idea of stories as spirit beings - an idea that's been discussed on this forum quite a lot. reading this book, small birds flew around the room out of every page and wild ponies jostle each other neighing into the wind reciprocating my yearning call as a storyteller. I wish you well , keep up the good work .
