First Friday Storynight at BLTC
July 2, 2010 – 7-9pm
Better Living Through Coffee - 100 Tyler St., Port Townsend, WA 98368
$5-10 Suggested Donation

This Friday, July 2, join The Mythsinger Foundation and host Brian Rohr for a special night of stories and song at “First Friday Storynight at BLTC." In celebration and honor of the oral tradition, Storyteller’s Deidre Woods and Robert Komishane will share their gifts to delight your spirits and souls.

Deidre Wood’s will share “whimsical stories that tell the tales of human beings entertaining the musings of the spirit being housed inside them.” While Robert Komishane will perform two Raps that deal with key aspects of his life story.

We will also host an open mic section, so please bring your own stories to share… only rule is no reading, everything must be shared in the ways of the oral tradition.

About the Artists:

Deidre Woods, founder of Open Heart Healing Arts, is an Artist, Writer and Storyteller whose life work is to facilitate sacred expression. Born in Michigan and currently residing in Phoenix, AZ, Washington State is the land she considers herself most native to, having lived here for over 27 years. According to Woods, she “serves as a conduit through which the power of Spirit flows [in order] to open hearts and raise awareness of ourselves as expressions of the divine.”

Local Poet and Rapper Robert Komishane’s stories have always been drawn exclusively from his life experience. “The formal way I expressed them, from 1963-2008, was with free verse poetry. Two years ago, after experimenting with metrical poetry, I began to listen closely to the top MC's (rappers), and came to realize that they are highly-accomplished practitioners of an art form that features a far more complex and skillful use of rhyme than ever before exhibited in English language poetry. And they do it to a musical beat. It was then that I made the leap to Rap.” Komishane has been working with some young people who are helping him in his development as a Rapper.

Brian Rohr is a poet, storyteller and healing arts practitioner living here in Port Townsend, WA.

About First Friday Storynight

Showcased will be local and visiting storytellers, musicians and weavers of magic with words. This Friday, June 4, join The Mythsinger Foundation and host Brian Rohr for a special night of stories and song at “First Friday Storynight at BLTC." In celebration and honor of the oral tradition, Storyteller’s Cherie Trebon and Rohr will share their gifts to delight your spirits and souls.

Cherie’s program, entitled, “Stories Learned At My Daddy’s Knees”, is a potpourri of stories, songs, and poems that honor the contribution made by her father, Bud Trebon, in the development of her lifelong love of the spoken word.

We will also host an open mic section, so please bring your own stories to share… only rule is no reading, everything must be shared in the ways of the oral tradition.

About the Artists:

Cherie Trebon has been telling stories professionally since 1990, drawing upon a broad repertoire of folktales, legends, myths, poetry, contemporary stories, and personal stories to transport listeners of all ages to far away places, times, or states of being. She has performed on national and international stages, including: Northwest Folklife Festival; Port Angeles Forest Stoytelling Festival; Duncan, BC Mid-Winter Festival; on KBCS and KONP Radio, and at schools, libraries, offices and so much more.

Cherie teaches classes covering storytelling fundamentals and techniques through Peninsula College. She is a member of the National Association of Storytelling, the Seattle Storytellers Guild, and The Story People of Clallam County, serving on the board of that organization. She is coordinator of the storytelling stages at the NW Folklife Festival and director of the Forest Storytelling Festival that is held in Port Angeles in mid-October.

Brian Rohr is a poet, storyteller and healing arts practitioner living here in Port Townsend, WA. A student of local master Storyteller Daniel Deardorff, Brian has shared myth from different cultures to national and international audiences. He believes that the old stories are alive, vital and can inform us on how to live our lives as authentic human beings.

Wish I could be there with all of you. Will be in West Seattle at my fifth grade granddaughter's theatre presentation of Willy Wonka. She plays Varucha and will carry that part off richly with no doubt! Victoria, I just asked for you to add me as a friend so I can chat with you about your beautiful 10 acre sanctuary. I left mine in Montana nine months ago and miss it sorely. You can find out more about me and the land at my website: www.athanorarts.com, which though out of date and sorely in need of overhaul ( any web designers in this community ?) will tell you a lot about me. thanks for contributing to our growing tribe.

Hi Brian, Is the Coffee night event on for tommarow?
If it is -then I will be bringing 4 friends with me to it. I didn't get the chance to talk much with you last month- I live in Sequim and have for the past 11 years. Yes, I am a student of Martins at the Westcountry school of myth- I travel over for it. I am excited to get involved locally and did make it to last weeks awsome storytelling at Daniels. I would like to see if anyone would be interested in attending/ contributing to a storytelling monthly or twice monthly gathering here in Sequim- I have a beautiful10 acre sanctuary/farm,woods, pond, creek, gardens, and teepee, space etc and would love to offer up my place for such a gathering. It would be a great joy to hold space for a story night myth feral happening going on way over here in Sequim.

Wow, what an intimate and wonderful storynight we had this past Friday... all in the theme of "mother"
Thanks Aimee for calling up the memories of Mom's and Food, which helped spark our creativity! And thanks to both you and Deborah for the wonderful sharings you brought forward.

Blessings,
-Brian

Hello everyone. Because of a scheduling conflict, Pam McWethy is not able to join us this night. We are so fortunate to have been able to get Aimee Ringle, the first feature storyteller at the first "First Friday Storynight," to share her gifts with us for this event... Thanks Aimee!

Well, Deborah I am delighted to see what you come up with. Maybe something from China? For some reason I am getting that hit at the moment. That is my momentary two cents! Blessings.

Awesome duo, Brian. Yahoooooo. In the meantime, I am sleuthing and scouting and searching for the best ever, over the top, woman myth I can find...any folks out there have suggestions for me??? I've got loads of books about women in myth, women in story, you know the kind, but heck not a one grabs me as the one I want to learn and grow with...not yet...
