Andrew, I'd be happy to meet with you to discuss the rites of passage work and mentoring that some of us here on the peninsula have done with youth over the last ten years. The group called Fire on the Mountain has been somewhat dormant for a while but I'd suggest joining there. I'd love to fill you in on some of Mythsinger's plans for the future. See you Saturday.

No, I have not done the TTC training. There are some good people involved, but I can not speak to the training itself. What I can say is that they are probably less focused on the mythic and ritual aspects of youth work. You may want something deeper than that. If so, I would suggest contacting Danny.

Still, TTC might be a good place to plug into the scene. Never know who you might meet there. I think that mentioning this at the next OMC might be a good way to bait the hook as well.

See you Saturday.

Thank you so much for the depth and breadth of your words, I resonate with all you say.
I have spent the five years before moving to Port Townsend in March in the Findhorn Community in Scotland. There I became increasingly involved with Men's work and holding space for younger men, bringing my own experience and learning, as I navigate a path out of my own dark places.
The greatest gift I received from my Vision Quest is that the voice that was for ever saying I am not ready is silent, so while acknowledging that I have much to learn, I do feel the time is right to engage from my heart.
Thank you again for the advice and links, I will check them out, and hope to see you on Saturday at OMC,
blessings, Andrew

Mainly I work with youth (primarily boys) and men. I came to this work originally through my teacher in San Diego. It was the men's work I did with him that opened my eyes to the calling, and the need for authentic rites of passage to be reintroduced into our culture. I myself was/am one of those young people who "fell through the cracks" ... and so I feel both obligated and fortunate to help others navigate the waters that I myself have been swimming in. That is essentially what mentoring is about.

The first thing I would offer, by way of humble suggestion, is to be as clear as you can be about how you want to be involved in this work (and how much time you realistically have to devote to it). To not be clear is to invite the wrong kind of trouble, especially since we are inviting other people's trouble (AKA Karma) into our lives. The paradox is this: This is bloody serious work ... yet at the same time it is not rocket science. We can only take people where we ourselves have been, which means that first and foremost; we must be actively engaged in our own unfolding growth and development. It is also essential that we embrace our past experiences and woundedness, for those are the teachings which will be of the greatest practical use to the people who come to us for mentoring. This is because it is they who choose us - not the other way around.

Having said that, I would then offer two pieces of advice; one mystical and the other one more pragmatic. The first is to hold your strong intention and then pray in your own fashion for what it is that you want to have happen. Be as specific as you can. Ask that you may be blessed so that you may become a blessing unto others. Do this with all your heart until you receive an answer. Just remember that "the answer" is not tailored to our ego or our agenda. In fact it is quite often the opposite. That is what often makes it so hard to see.

The second is to just jump in with both feet. Find an organization that already does this work and volunteer your time. The organization you choose, will depend on your intention ... and if your prayers are strong, the organization may even choose you ;. ) I began with a group out in Bothel called Journeys

http://www.riteofpassagejourneys.org/

The woman who runs the program now is also one of it's graduates. Her name is Darcy Ottey. I think Collin from the OMC is doing work with them right now. He might be a good one to talk to. Obviously I would also talk to Danny. He has a lot of connections and has also facilitated his own initiatory work. There is also another organization called Teen Talking Circles

http://www.teentalkingcircles.org/

They have trainings and chapters all over Seattle. Lots more to choose from, but that's a start at least.

I hope this has been useful for you. We can talk more any time you like. Thank you so much for giving me an excuse to talk about my passion ... and for helping me to remember who I am and why I am here. I'm so excited that men of your caliber are on the path and I look forward to walking along the road together with fierceness and loving kindness.

Shanti,

Scott

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your message about the Vision Quest trip. Sounds like you are primed and ready for action. I also heard the request for the voices of men who have mentoring experience. I have spent some time working in that field. If there is any way that I can be of service, please let me know.

Look forward to seeing you again at the next meeting.

Cheers,

Scott
